Dr. Lisa Dieker, a professor at the University of Kansas in the Department of Special Education, and Dr. Rebecca Hines, a professor at the University of Central Florida in the College of Community Innovation and Education, have worked with schools and parents across the country. Dr. Dieker directs a center in the Achievement and Assessment Institute call Flexible Learning through Innovations in Technology in Education (FLITE) and Dr. Hines directs several doctoral grants and the teacher preparation program. In this podcast, they take a fun and informal look at "practical" solutions from teachers, parents, and people with disabilities. The approach in this podcast is to provide fast, flexible thinking about "real" life problems. This podcast is not about the "legal" approach but their best advice from personal and professional experience.

Project RAISE is a partnership between UCP of Central Florida (UCP), the University of Central Florida (UCF), and the University of Kansas with interconnectedness between the institutions at every phase of the research. The Project RAISE technology focuses on supporting students with disabilities in learning coding, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content, and improving time on task and social-emotional communication skills. The specific technology being developed is an AI agent to help students with learn basic coding skills while increasing self-regulation, time-on-task, and communication skills in the classroom setting. The use of the AI agent technology is structured into three phases which when the project is complete in 2025 all aspects of the project are FREE for use by teachers in their classrooms.

To the right of the text is a simple, circular icon resembling a yellow robot face outlined in teal, with two small eyes and a mouth. The entire logo is framed by a white and teal-bordered geometric shape, giving it a modern, tech-inspired look."

The Flexible Learning through Innovations in Technology (FLITE): STEM Coaching Suite is a collaborative project between the University of Kansas (KU) and the University of Central Florida (UCF). The project also involves three public school districts in Central Florida and one in Massachusetts. The project website, hosted by the University of Central Florida, consists of the three primary components the team is developing as open educational resources (OER) upon project completion. These three components are: (1) A Coaching Cycle and related tools and resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) coaches to support teachers working with students with disabilities. (2) A Suite of STEM Resources to improve instruction and outcomes for students with disabilities.

The tools harvested in this suite are from various sources to support online professional development (PD) for teachers and the instructional coaches who work with those teachers through evidence-based practices in special education, mathematics, and science. (3) A web-based Observation Dashboard, DebriefScape™, for data tagging to support more efficient coaching and to allow teachers to see directly targeted practices (high leverage practice; HLP) they want to work on in their classrooms. This tool includes all tags of the HLPs in special education, with additional resources being integrated from various STEM projects and partnerships. In addition, the tool allows for customized tags to be incorporated into the system, creating a community of tags for the integration and alignment of biometric devices a teacher might want to use to understand their performance further. All tagged data and videos reside with the user, and only those involved in this research study provide the research team with videos and tags. All resources on this project will be FREE upon project completion in 2027.

Custom solutions

FLITE partners directly with schools, districts, and organizations to develop customized solutions that address local needs and priorities. These partnerships may include instructional coaching, leadership development, STEM program design, research collaborations, or multi-year improvement planning. By blending research, on-the-ground experience, and co-design, FLITE creates supports that fit your context—not someone else’s model.

Custom solutions

The FLITE Team partners with school districts interested in innovative practices to address settings and to support teachers working in co-taught teams.

The team is also working with scholars on innovations in using data analytics to support students with more intensive support needs, using AI to create dashboards for progress monitoring, finding ways to identify teacher stressors using biometric and neurophysiological data, as well as finding a way to connect senior citizens with novice teachers to support them in the classroom.

FLITE welcomes research partnerships that advance understanding of how technology, coaching, and instructional design shape learning. By collaborating with scholars and institutes, we co-develop studies, contribute evidence, and support projects that push educational practice forward.
